Abstract
Voice professionals such as actors, teachers, Speech-language pathologists, have a increased risk of developing voice disorders, because they have to regulary use their voice for work. The prevalence of voice disorders and the possible risk factors among teachers and other voice professionals have been widley reaserched. However the prevalence and risk factors for voice disorders in the Latvian Speech-language pathology student population has not been studied so far. This problem determined the research topic "The risk factors and incidence of voice problems in RSU Speech-language pathology students". The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of voice problems and the possible risk factors among speechlanguage pathology students at Riga Stradiņš University. The practical methods of the study include the use of a modified Voice Risk Factor Questionnaire for teachers and the Vocal Symptom Scale. The study included 57 RSU Speech-langauge pathology students who are able to communicate, write and read in Latvian. Microsoft Excel software was used for data collection. IBM SPSS Statistic 27.0 software was used for static data processing. The reaserch results show that 60% of future Speech-language pathologists in RSU have experienced voice problems during their lives. 33% of RSU Speech-language pathology students note two or more vocal symptoms that occur daily or once a week and more often, this indicates possible functional voice disorders. According to Fisher's exact test, a statistically significant relationship was found between students' voice disorders and unsatisfactory air quality in the workplace (p=0.013), poor general health (p=0.035) and harmful habits such as smoking (p=0.045) and working with a sore neck (p=0.006).The most frequently reported health problems among RSU Speech-language pathology students are back pain, shoulder and neck muscle pain and respiratory allergies. Voice disorders are common among the future Speech-language pathologists in RSU. The voice disorder cause is multifactorial. These results show that it is necessary for students to start using the knowledge of vocal hygiene, vocal use and care in their everyday life. The results of the study remind us of the need to pay more attention to Speech-language pathology student voice quality and general health. That is because the prevalence of voice disorders before entering the profession is already almost as high as in the Latvian teacher population.
