Abstract
Background: In this literature review the prevalence of medial epicondylitis in amateur golfers is presented and addressed. The aim of this work is to describe and review medial epicondylitis and look more closely at its prevalence in amateur in comparison to normal population. What medial epicondylitis is, what causes it and what are the occupational-related risk factors and sports-related risk factors, how prevalent the disease is and how it can be managed and prevented are the questions that are answered in this literature review. Medial epicondylitis is a condition in which the tendon of the medial epicondyle inside of the elbow becomes inflamed and causes pain. This condition is called a “golfer’s elbow”. It is named as golfer’s elbow since a golf swing creates tension and stress to the tendon. This then causes it to become inflamed and painful. However even when named as golfer’s elbow many of the people suffering from the medial epicondylitis have never handled a golf club. This correlation between risk factors and prevalence in amateur golfers from golf compared to prevalence and risk factors of different work-related issues is what we are looking into in this literature review. Objectives: Objectives of this study are to find out what medial epicondylitis is, what are its risk factors are, is the disease more a sports- or work-related issue, what the prevalence in amateur golfers and in general population is, how it can be managed and how it can be prevented. Materials and methods: Information about medial epicondylitis in this thesis is literature review. Multiple sources have been reviewed and analyzed, those include - AMBOSS, PubMed and Google Scholar. Results: Despite the name “golfer’s elbow” this literature review showed that the main causes of medial epicondylitis are occupation related factors. These factors contribute to much more cases when compared to golf related factors. With this being said, the prevalence of medial epicondylitis in amateur golf is still much higher when compared to those with disease originating from occupational background. Conclusions: Golf is much more likely to cause medial epicondylitis in a patient when compared to different occupational factors in normal working life and the prevalence of golf-related medial epicondylitis among amateur golfers is much higher in comparison to non-golf related prevalence of medial epicondylitis.
