Abstract
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for the metabolism of calcium and phosphate in the body as well as bone mineralization and remodeling. Vitamin D is mostly synthesized in the stratum basale of the skin due to exposure to UV light from the sun. However, during winter periods this source for vitamin D synthesis is decreased and supplementation is most often necessary. Its link and mechanism to mental health and cognition is not well understood yet but regained more and more interest in the last couple of years. Vitamin D and its associated factors have a significant impact on mental health. Specifically, sufficient vitamin D levels are related to a decreased risk of sustaining mental health conditions. On the contrary, supplementation is still not a viable option to treat mental health problems but to simply act as an effective prophylactic measure.
