Abstract
„Chromium and medicines used to treat diabetes. Is there any interaction?” Diabetes is a chronic disease that, unfortunately, cannot be completely cured, but treatment can reduce the risk of complications and ensure normal blood glucose levels. More than 246 million people worldwide have diabetes, 54,000 diabetes patients in Latvia, and this number is growing every year. The reasons for the increase in morbidity are an aging population, a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. (1) In addition to medication, people with diabetes need a balanced diet and physical activity. Nowadays, people use a lot of food supplements, especially special diabetic vitamins that contain chromium. Chromium is an important trace element required for the proper metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids in the human body. (2) The aim of the study was to examine whether there is an interaction between chromium and medicines used to treat diabetes. The study has provided more knowledge about chromium, drugs used to treat diabetes and their interactions.
