Abstract
ABSTRACT The subject of the thesis is „Improvements in Sweden's international image in the context of cryptocurrency development”. Cryptocurrencies are becoming a more and more popular way of billing and, even if many countries don’t acknowledge these currencies as a legitimate way of payment, they do have a negative impact on central bank authority. Sweden is the first developed country who wants to create their own central bank digital currency (CBDC) which would improve their international image as an innovative country. In the first section of the thesis the author looks upon the Liberal Theory in International Relations, as well as the concept of soft power, as it helps to identify the image of Sweden. In the second section the thesis includes cryptocurrency and its significance in the international system, and Sweden and its image. The third section is the empirical research, where the author looked upon the possibilities of cryptocurrency, as well as its role in Sweden’s narrative. The research method used for this thesis was quantitative data analysis, where the author used materials and information from Sweden’s central bank project papers, mass media publications, international institution documents and other sources. After the conclusion of the research, Sweden’s CBDC is planned to be issued soon in the next few years, as well as many investors see potential in it. Sweden is not the only country who plans to issue a CBDC – other countries too have started their research on it and the EU is planning a digital euro. Sweden’s knowledge and experience in this field could play a big role in an EU project of this kind. It is clear that cryptocurrencies and CBDC have potential no only in economics, but, by using the technology of cryptocurrencies, also in other spheres to modernize and improve processes, for example, for bureaucratic matters or security upgrades. Nevertheless, this technologies can also bear problems which they need to confront with. Sweden’s initiatives, political management and advanced technological development are good requirements to deal with the new challenges, as well as to profit from the realization of the project. Quantitative data analysis offers the option to look and different sources, to gain information about the ongoing process, but it still needs some time to see how the development process will go. Sweden is not the only country that wants to protect its economy and currency from private corporation cryptocurrencies and are open for cooperation in the field to speed up the process.
