Abstract

Title of the Bachelor thesis - “Knowledge of probiotics and their application by doctors, nurses and pharmacists” Relevance - the WHO has defined probiotics as living microorganisms that, when administered in sufficient quantities, are beneficial to health, and many studies have been conducted over the last decade that have demonstrated the multifaceted beneficial effects of probiotic bacteria on the human body. The market for the sale of probiotic products has been growing rapidly over the last 20 years. The European Parliament has not approved any health claim for products containing probiotics, so health professionals are primarily responsible for ensuring that patients are properly informed. The aim of the research is to find out the knowledge of doctors, nurses and pharmacists about probiotics and application habits. Research participants - 110 health professionals - 66 pharmacists, 26 nurses, 18 doctors. Research methods - an anonymous questionnaire was used in the research. Results and conclusions - the knowledge of doctors, nurses and pharmacists about probiotics is good, and no statistically significant difference was found between the knowledge of these professions. Pharmacists are more likely to use probiotic supplements available at pharmacies and probiotics like nurses and doctors, nurses are more likely to choose probiotic yoghurts, and doctors are more likely to use probiotics. Respondents believe that probiotics are most effective in helping a person taking antibiotics. Respondents most often recommend probiotics to patients or clients, and pharmacists are statistically significantly more likely to recommend probiotics to patients or clients than nurses. Keywords: probiotics, knowledge, doctors, nurses, pharmacists
