Abstract
This literature review looks at the effects of low atmospheric pressure on the cardiovascular system by reviewing previously conducted research papers focusing on blood pressure changes at high altitudes. It furthermore explores what medications have been used to buffer these changes and their impact on the cardiovascular system. Low atmospheric pressure at high altitudes leads to a hypoxic environment. This elicits a response of the sympathetic nervous system to increase blood pressure. This is a compensatory mechanism allowing the body to adapt to hypoxic environments. Proper acclimatization and certain combinations of medications allow for better control of blood pressure. People might not be aware of these environmental impacts on their cardiovascular system. It is therefore important to educate them about it, especially if they have comorbidities or don’t adapt well to a hypoxic environment. This research paper discusses physiological effects that occur mainly during acute exposure to high altitudes. Furthermore, exploring differences in the increase of blood pressure, depending on medications administered, acclimatization, length of stay, the extent of altitude, and having hypertension. It also acknowledges that there are many confounding elements that increase blood pressure, including lifestyle habits, genetic predisposition, and weather changes.
