Abstract
Initially in master’s thesis “Reflection of electric vehicles in the Latvian media 2017–2022 in the context of European Green Deal” summarizes the main information regarding the impact of climate change in the world, fundamental aspects, and significant factors that contribute to climate change. Information was gathered regarding the main ways of how climate neutrality can be achieved within the context of European Green Deal as well as the role / power of media to fight against climate change. Research on the strategies of European Green Deal were made as well as initiatives and implementations of these strategies, including the current situation in Latvia and support programs for reaching climate neutrality considering European Green Deal. The theoretical part of the study concludes with insight of the importance of electric vehicles as alternative fuel vehicles, their usage and environmental impact. The theoretical part of the study reveals that the mitigation of climate change and action guidelines are the main tasks of today’s climate change generation. Media is another way of how to inform society regarding climate changes, thus ensuring that most of the society has access to the information. The transportation of passengers and goods is one of the biggest polluter in cities due to the combustion of fossil fuels by vehicles. Electric vehicle is considered to be the fastest, cheapest and easiest way to achieve climate neutrality. In order to reach the main goal of climate neutrality it is crucial for media to inform and educate the society, additionally empowering scientists, government, and experts in the field. In the empirical part of the study the reflection of electric vehicles in the public broadcasting (Lsm.lv) and commercial media (Delfi.lv) is being studied within the period from 01.01.2017. till 31.12.2019. and from 01.01.2020. till 01.04.2022, mainly using media agenda theory and thematic analysis. The qualitative analysis of media articles has shown that following the publication of European Green Deal public broadcasting and commercial media has been creating more extensive articles and provided information on electric vehicles more often. The quantitative results of the study show that articles regarding European Green Deal and electric vehicle have a negative or / and neutral content characteristics, as well as authors portrays of prejudice and factual inconsistencies. Based on the fieldwork and the results of qualitative and quantitative analysis, conclusions and proposals were made regarding the reflection of electric vehicles in Latvian media. The master thesis consists of 85 pages, 21101 words, 4 chapters followed by 10 subsections. The research contains of 8 charts and 1 photo.
