Abstract
Epidemioloģiskajos pētījumos ēšanas traucējumu izplatības rādītāji svārstās no 1% līdz
Pētījumā piedalījās 230 latviski runājošas sievietes vecumā no 18 līdz 35 gadiem
The topic of the bachelor’s thesis ir “Relationship between personality traits and signs of eating disorders in women”. The aim of the study was to determine which personality traits are associated with eating disorder signs in women, and the main research question is which personality traits are associated with eating disorder signs in women. In epidemiological studies, the prevalence of eating disorders ranges from 1% to 4%, and approximately 75-90% of all people with eating disorders are women (Smink et al., 2012; Rosenberg & Kosslyn, 2011). This gender difference is often explained by the theory of objectification, according to which the female body, unlike the male body, is generally perceived as an object and evaluated by appearance (Roberts et al., 2018). It is possible that some personality traits may be a factor in causing or influencing eating disorders (Carriere et al., 2019; Dufresne et al., 2020), and a relationship between personality and eating habits has been shown (Mõttus et al., 2012; Wen et al., 2015), however, in Latvian sample relationship between personality and eating habits or eating disorder signs has not been studied yet. This study involved 230 Latvian-speaking women aged 18 to 35 (M=22,86 years, SD=4,95 years), while 207 respondents were included in the data processing. The Latvian Personality Survey (LPA-v3, Perepjolkina & Reņģe, 2013) was used to assess personality traits, while the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q 6.0, Fairburn & Beglin, 2008; adapted in Latvian language by Jansone, 2013) was used to measure the signs of eating disorders. Data were collected online through the VisiDati.lv portal by distributing surveys on social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc.). It was found that there is a weak association between signs of eating disorders and such personality traits as Neuroticism and Agreeableness, and such narrower level personality traits as Anxiety, Stress resistance, Shyness, Adventurism, Compliance and Simplicity. The results of the study can be used in further researches of the relationship between personality and eating disorders, which could help to gain a deeper understanding of the predisposition to eating disorders.
