Abstract

In Latvia, postgraduate education can be obtained in two higher education institution – at the 1st Medical College of the University of Latvia or at the Riga Stradins University (RSU) bachelor’s study programme “Midwife”. There are defferent reasons that influence the choice to start studying midwifery in one or another programme, but after obtaining a qualification in college, midwives tend to choose to continue their studies in a bachelor’s program as well. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to find out the motivation of college graduates and practicing midwives to obtain a bachelor’s degree in the RSU study programme “Midwife”. The study was conducted as a qualitative study onvolving 5 midwives who were studying at RSU at the time of the study after graduating from college. Motivation to improve oneself and acquire new knowledge is associated with possible improvements in one’s professional development and career, the provision of quality and evidence-based practices provided for clients and patients, financial stability and demand in the labor market. The path to self-growth and realization of one’s potential is mentioned in the study as an important factor of internal motivation. Summarizing and analyzing the data obtained in the interviews with the method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, 13 factors influencing motivation were put forward, the main ones: continuing studies as the next step for master studies, obtaining highest education in the program “Midwife” available in Latvia, desire to improve and develop professional skills and knowledge, gaining experience and gaining a recognized level of education. In the study, the motivation to study is influenced by both internal and external factors, which reflect both the personal characteristics of the participants themselves and the shortcomings of the education and health care system. In Latvia, this was the first study that reveals the motivation of young and practicing midwives to receive further education, improving both their skills and gaining new knowledge. It shows the desire of midwives to develop in their profession, to promote the quality of midwifery education and to strengthen the role of the midwifery profession in the health care system. Keywords of bachelor’s thesis: midwives, midwifery education, studies, study opportunities, bachelor, motivation to study, career choice, development, higher education, maternity care, midwifery profession, further education.
