Abstract
Background: Sleep and the circadian rhythm are important in the human physiology, strongly undervalued and poorly understood by the general population. The prevalence of sleep disorders is steadily increasing and its effects on the human health need to be described. Objectives: This literature review aims to analyze the importance of sleep and the circadian rhythm in perspective to the human health and wellbeing. It will discuss different aspects of physiological sleep, changes in the healthy ageing population, long and short term effects of sleep disruption and circadian rhythm disturbances. Materials and methods: A total of 34 sources were used in this literature review, including scientific articles in journals, e-books and web sources to provide as many evidence based information. Conclusion: Sleep and the circadian rhythm have been shown to be linked to psychological, metabolic, cardiac and cancerous diseases and therefore are very important in the human health, not only in the long term, but also in the short term.
