    Characterization of the Essence of the Human Physical Capital Concept in Relation to the Fitness Industry

    A large part of the society perceives the body as a fundamental tool to advance in social life, as a capital in labour relations and in sexual relations as well. The possibility to transform one’s own physical capital into economic, social or cultural capital, which is an opportunity a person receives through carrying out physical activity, is also a value in the field of fitness which is an industry that is worth billions. That is why the aim of this study was to investigate in-depth characterization of the nature of the physical capital concept, linking it to the field of fitness. The study is based on 48 literature sources and scientific articles, 2 of which are in Latvian, 5 in Russian and 41 – in English. The essence of the content of the physical capital concept has been investigated and the connections of notions in different theoretical contexts has been evaluated, starting from the beginning of the physical capital concept. The definitions were grouped in a broader and narrower scope. In the narrower sense, physical capital is a person’s skills and abilities – innate or acquired over time –, which help to perform a specific physical work, move, strengthen or improve physical health and capacity for work. In the broader sense – as values and investments in the body, building of a body in society. In the broader sense of physical capital, the main goal is its transformation into other forms of capital in order to obtain additional benefits or a new status in the society.

    Essential Characteristics of the Fitness Concept and the Area of Fitness in Latvia and the World

    Despite the great popularity of fitness around the world, it is still unclear what fitness is and how people understand it. The essence of fitness has gradually evolved from simple physical fitness to a cultural phenomenon. The second path of fitness development is from the physical health of a person reflected in a person’s readiness to do physical work to the desire to improve their own quality of life. That is why the aim of this study was to investigate in depth the essential characteristics of the fitness concept and the area of fitness. The study is based on 41 literature sources and scientific articles, 8 of which are in Russian and 33 – in English. The essence of the content of the fitness concept has been investigated and the hierarchy of concepts has been evaluated in different theoretical contexts, starting from the historical beginning of the fitness concept. Definitions were grouped in a broader and a narrower sense: 1) fitness as a set of attributes and abilities and 2) fitness as a way of life, lifestyle and quality of life. The essential categories of the fitness concept were compiled. The change of fitness area and its influence on the society was discussed. By summarizing the analysis of fitness definitions and evaluating fitness according to various theoretical aspects, it can be concluded that fitness is interpreted as sport competition fitness, as an implementation of a healthy way of life and as physical fitness or health-oriented physical fitness. Due to constant change and improvement of the body ideal sometimes it is complicated to participate in the process of improving health, also achieving it requires a lot of energy and time. People don’t understand where is the difference between healthy body and fitness body prepared for competition or commercial. Therefore the greater the beauty industry and fitness area becomes, the weaker becomes the human.

    Evaluation of Work Mode and Its Importance for Home–Work and Work–Home Relationships : The Role of Resilience, Coping with Stress, and Passion for Work

    The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated and facilitated the introduction of telework in organizations. This has also impacted the workers’ relationship between work and private life. The aim of the current study was to examine the links between resilience and mode of work (stationary vs. remote) and the work–home and home–work relationships, and whether they are mediated by passion for work and strategies of coping with stress. The study was carried out on a sample of 1251 participants from Great Britain, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Vietnam. The following measures were used: The Survey Work–Home Interaction, The Brief Resilience Coping Scale, The Passion Scale, and the Brief COPE. Results showed that the more stationary the mode of work, the lower the intensity of the negative influence of personal life on work. Resilience was revealed to have a positive effect on worker functioning. The study also showed a relationship between education and gender and passion for work. Finally, the importance of furthering the knowledge on the home–work and work–home relationships among teleworkers is discussed.

    Neural activation patterns in open-skilled and closed-skilled athletes during motor response tasks : insights from ERP analysis

    The present study explored behavioral outcomes and neural correlates of cognitive control abilities in open-skill sports athletes compared with closed-skill sports athletes. The participants of the study were 16 right-handed male athletes. Nine basketball players formed a group of athletes from open-skill sports, and seven outdoor track and field runners formed a comparison group for closed-skill sports. During the two-color Choice Response Time task with simultaneous EEG registration, psychophysiological observation was performed to assess athletes’ functioning. A significant interaction between a sports type and the hand reveals more symmetrical functioning of the hands in basketball players, which is also confirmed by the neural activity of brain regions responsible for motor action (C3 and C4). Although there was no main effect of the sport type, the study revealed closer patterns of motor action and neural regulation of the left and right hand in open-skilled athletes than in closed-skilled athletes.

    Pre-service Sport Specialists' Perceptions of Academic Integrity

    Academic integrity is fundamental value of pre-service sport specialists’ professional competence developing, which promote public confidence in coaching and teaching as a process for professional and personal development. There is an ethical dissonance that the distribution of all dishonesty types was significantly higher than the perception of their legitimacy and that students conduct academic dishonesty despite its perception as unethical (Blau & Eshet-Alkalai, 2017). The research aim is to reveal the pre-service sport specialists’ perceptions of academic integrity and to find out the ways for promotion of academic integrity. The methods: a theoretical analysis of scientific literature, an interpretative phenomenological semi-structured interview, open and axial coding. The research sample 135 pre-service sport specialist, voluntary participants, 47% – female, 53% – male. The main research results: academic integrity perception is important for the development of pre-service sport specialists’ professional competence. Pre-service sport specialists' main opinion about benefit of being academically dishonest is time saving and personal gain. The main causes of academic dishonesty are laziness, lack of knowledge and competence, searching for an easy way.

    Nowadays activities with the involvement of both children and parents are becoming increasingly popular. There are a variety of such activities, but in this study we focus on infant floating. It is very important how parents feel themselves in such type of lessons and how they are able to perform the exercises with their infants independently and orient themselves in a specific aquatic environment. Parents’ competences in infant floating on the whole are often characterised by their insufficient knowledge, skills and practical abilities in maintaining correct and proper behaviour in the aquatic environment. Therefore, the aim of our study is to explore and analyse the assessment of parents’ competences in infant floating. Based on the research results it would be possible to develop a more accurate model for the enhancement of the parents’ competences required for infant floating and put forward recommendations for improving parents' competences. An assessment survey of the parents' competences in infant floating was conducted from the beginning of September 2017 until the end of October. 33 swimming experts participated voluntarily in the assessment of parents’ competences in infant floating. The mean, standard deviation and mode was used to process the numerical data gathered from the responses. The content and statements put forward in the survey questionnaire regarding parents’ competences in infant floating were based on scientific concepts. The results of the survey of swimming experts indicate that all of the components proposed by the authors that influence parents’ competences in infant floating play a significant role. It could also be surely concluded that at present, the overall level of parental competence in infant floating in the opinion of experts is average. In general, all the surveyed swimming experts are of the opinion that parents should definitely supplement or acquire additional knowledge, skills and abilities in order to increase their level of competences in infant floating in order to be able to effectively apply these competences during independent lessons with their infants.

    Vecāku kompetences veicināšana zīdaiņu peldināšanā

    Currently, there are conflicting views around the world regarding infant floating. There is no consensus on the most effective techniques for facilitating infant swimming skills. Infant floating is dominated by a therapeutic and pedagogical approach that ensures parents' involvement in the process. There is no unified methodology for infant floating in Latvia. Furthermore, the number of infant swimming specialists, as well as adequate infrastructure, is insufficient and limited. In the existing situation, it is important to increase parents' competence in infant floating so that parents are able to carry out infant bathing independently. The aim of the study is to develop a model for improving parental competence in infant floating. The main research methods comprised of studying and analysing scientific literature and modelling. The paper is based on 27 scientific literature sources, 22 of them in English, 2 in Latvian and 3 in Russian. The developed model of parental competence improvement in infant floating includes parents' theoretical knowledge of infant floating; independent research on infant floating; water safety; the application of infant floating skills under a specialist’s guidance and the ability to independently use acquired skills without guidance. In the future it will be possible to test the developed model to evaluate its usefulness in promoting parental competence in infant floating, thus ensuring parents' ability to float the infant independently.

    Women's in Fitness Social Belonging and Physical Activity in the Context of Quality of Life

    Forming as many interpersonal relationships as possible is one of the most important goals in peoples’ lives. Mutual physical activities create a basis for social belonging. Therefore, the goal of the study is to determine the correlation between the components of social belonging and physical activity among women in fitness. The social belonging analysis was conducted with the use of questionnaires (adopted in Latvian), and a shortened version of IPAQ to determine the levels of physical activity. The components of social belonging were defined, and several weak, but significant, correlations between these components and the level of physical activity were found. According to the data obtained in the current study we can conclude, that social belonging has positive impact on PA. Those, who more often feel the relatedness, satisfactory from interpersonal relationship and inclusion in the social groups are more physically active. In order to evaluate, how the quality of life aspect of social belonging for women in fitness correlates with physical activity, they must be taken into account.
