Daugavpils žēlsirdīgo māsu skolas izveidošanas aizsākumi (1939−1943)
(Rēzeknes Tehnoloģiju akadēmija, 2016) Fokina, Olga; Millere, Inga; Deklava, Liana; Circenis, Kristaps; Lubkina, Velta; Ušča, Svetlana; Zvaigzne, Anda; Rīga Stradiņš University
The Latvian Red Cross organization was founded in 1918 and one of its activities was foundation and maintenance of hospitals in various towns and cities of Latvia. The need for well-prepared charity sisters emerged due to expanding range of medical activities. Consequently, this caused the need to establish sisters’ schools in Latvia. In 1921 charity sisters’ schools were established in Riga and Liepaja, in 1932 the school was established in Jelgava. Later on, in 1939 two more charity sisters’ schools in Riga started their work. However, the demand for charity sisters was growing. The lack of charity sisters was obvious in Daugavpils medical institutions, too. In 1939 the only Latgalian charity sisters’ school was opened in the city to solve that vital problem. That school in Daugavpils worked from 1939 to 1943. During that particular period of time two graduations of educated charity sisters took place. In 1943 the school stopped functioning because of the war situation. This article aims at performing analytical overview of foundation activities of Daugavpils Charity Sisters’ School.

Praktizējošu māsu profesionālās dzīves kvalitātes psihosociālie aspekti un tos ietekmējošie faktori. Promocijas darba kopsavilkums

Psychosocial Aspects of Professional Quality of Life of Practising Nurses' and Factors Affecting Them. Summary of the Doctoral Thesis
(Rīga Stradiņš University, 2013) Circenis, Kristaps; Millere, Inga
Nurses who work at medical institutions need to face many distress situations daily, nurses often work more than one workload, and are constantly under emotional tension, physical and mental fatigue. Due to overwork, the risk of an injury increases, as well as emotional exhaustion and risks of professional errors may occur. Due to the negative psychosocial aspects of professional life quality, nurses` work may become less productive; employees are absent due to illness, as well as the fluctuation of staff increases. Decreasing work – related burnouts will not only positively influence the people working in the same sector, but also decrease the expenses and offer economical benefit to organizations because the work absence and illnesses, as well as the fluctuation of staff decrease. The aim of the research was to examine the professional life qualities and its psychosocial aspects and their influencing factors of practitioner nurses. In order to attain the objective of the research, a quantitative, non-experimental research was carried out by applying certain tools, such as: The scale of professional life quality, Maslach`s Burnout Inventory, Bek`s Depression Inventory The self-appraisal questionnaire about the features of the state of anxiety, the questionnaire for nurses. The participants of this study were nurses who are approved and practicing within the limits of the Republic of Latvia. The respondents were chosen by using the accessibility i.e. convenience selection method. Overall 1094 respondents were questioned and their age was from 22 to 68 years, with the average length of service - 17,12 years. The results of the research demonstrate that for the selected nurses, there exist statistically important correlations between the psychosocial aspects of professional life quality, as well as statistically important differences in the psychosocial aspects of professional life quality depending on age, work experience, professional profile. The surveyed nurses as several of the most important and influential factors of psychosocial aspects of professional life mentioned, the risk of an infection, inadequate salary and emotionally intense work with people. It needs to be noted that 93,4% of respondents considered supervisions to be necessary among practitioner nurses in Latvia. Thesis contains 44 tables, 3 pictures, 101 references. The volume of thesis is 94 pages, appendices on 10 pages.

Relationship between Lesion Parameters after Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation in Striated Muscles and Parenchymal Tissue
(2024-07) Gružienė, Aldona; Liobikas, Julius; Paparde, Artūrs; Kerzienė, Sigita; Gružaitė, Jovita; Skaudickas, Darijus; Lenčiauskas, Povilas; Circenis, Kristaps; Vaitiekaitis, Gintautas; Department of Nursing and Obstetric Care
Background and Objectives: Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is a highly successful intervention. By comparing the lesion changes in prostate parenchymal and striated muscle tissues after RFCA with and without cooling, it was possible to assess the correlation between the shape regularity, area, and perimeter of the thermal lesion, and to predict the geometric shape changes of the lesions. Materials and Methods: A standard prostate and striated muscle RFCA procedure was performed on 13 non-purebred dogs in two sessions: no cooling and cooling with 0.1% NaCl solution. Microtome-cut 2-3 µm sections of tissue samples were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and further examined. The quotient formula was employed to evaluate the geometric shape of the damage zones at the ablation site. Results: The extent of injury following RFCA in striated muscle tissue was comparable to that in prostate parenchymal tissue. Regression analysis indicated a strong and positive relationship between area and perimeter in all experimental groups. In the experimental groups of parenchymal tissues with and without cooling, an increase in the area or perimeter of the damage zone corresponded to an increase in the quotient value. A similar tendency was observed in the striated muscle group with cooling. However, in the striated muscle group without cooling, an increase in lesion area or perimeter lowered the quotient value. Standardised regression coefficients demonstrated that in the striated muscle with cooling, the damage zone shape was more determined by area than perimeter. However, in the parenchymal tissue, the perimeter had a more substantial impact on the damage zone shape than the area. Conclusions: The damage area and perimeter have predictive power on the overall shape regularity of damage zone geometry in both striated muscles and parenchymal tissue. This approach is employed to achieve a balance between the need for tumour eradication and the minimisation of ablation-induced complications to healthy tissue.

Stress Coping Mechanisms and Professional Burnout Among Latvian Nurses
(2014) Deklava, Liana; Circenis, Kristaps; Millere, Inga; Sabiedrības veselības un sociālās labklājības fakultāte
The reason of burnout is the negative influence of job stress. Due to burnout nurses work may become less productive, employees are absent due to illness, as well as the fluctuation of staff increases. It shows the need to develop adaptive coping strategies among nurses. The aim of the study was to find out stress coping mechanisms and burnout presence among nurses practicing in Latvia. The instruments which used for data collection: demographic questionnaire, R.S. Lazarus and S. Folkman’s The Ways of Coping Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory. The Ways of Coping Scale completed by 484 nurses working in healthcare institutions in different regions of Latvia in the age range from 21 to 66 years. The highest values have: planful problem-solving, self-controlling and positive reappraisal, accepting responsibility and seeking social support; while the lowest values can be seen in two scales – confrontive coping and escape/avoidance. The prevailing ways of coping stress in the sample are planful problem solving, self-controlling and positive reappraisal. Maslach burned out inventory which was completed by 587 practicing nurses. Age range of respondents was from 22 to 68 years. Descriptive statistical parameters for Maslach Burnot Inventory by subscales: mean for Emotional Exhaustion subscale - 22.75 (SD=10.75), for Depersonalization subscale was 7.52 (SD=5.30) and for rank of Personal achievement subscale - 34.57 (SD=8.22).

Supervision in Nursing : Latvian sample study
(Elsevier Science, 2015) Circenis, Kristaps; Jeremejeva, Jekaterina; Millere, Inga; Deklava, Liāna; Paparde, Artūrs; Sudraba, Velga; Miljkovic, D.; Sabiedrības veselības un sociālās labklājības fakultāte
Burnout is a work related mental health impairment comprising three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment. Preventing and reducing work related burnout is of great importance not only with regard to the quality of life of those affected or endangered, but also for preventing the economic losses which come about as a result of absenteeism and job turnover. Supervision is known to be one of protective factors of burnout and professional effectiveness. Purpose of study was to evaluate the effectiveness of supervision of nurses practicing in mental health hospital in Latvia aimed at preventing burnout. To measure burnout we used Maslach's 22-item Burnout Inventory (MBI). It is the well-studied measurement of burnout in the literature. MBI assesses emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and the lack of personal achievement. Study sample included 60 registered and practicing mental health nurses, sample was divided in 2 groups - one who were provided with group and individual supervision (n=30), and the second - control group (n=30). The experimental group received 8 sessions of supervision. The levels of burnout were assessed 2 times for each nurse - before and after supervision sessions. The data show that there is a statistically significant difference between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization indicators within experimental group participants before and after the supervisions as well as between experimental group and control group indicators after supervisions. Supervisions reduced burnout indicators in experimental group compared to control group. Supervision also was helpful for nurses to understand better themselves, their emotions and behavioral aspects of the various work issues.
